Mayor Cory A. Booker, and other dignitaries were joined by former WBA World Welterweight Boxing Champion Zab "Super" Judah and Professional Boxer and Newark native Alex "The Brick City Bullet" Perez to kick off the City of Newark's 2010 Super Summer Initiative today. The kick off celebration took place in Nat Turner Park which is Newark's largest municipal park, located at 251-289 18th Avenue at the corner of Boyd Street and Muhammad Ali Avenue.

This year's initiative is themed a "Super Healthy Summer" and is focusing on reducing childhood obesity, to prevent adult illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Mayor Booker is currently serving as co-chair of the First Lady Michelle Obama's national task force, which is leading the "Let's Move!" campaign to end the problem of childhood obesity within a generation.  During the event, Mayor Booker presented City Proclamations to this year's Super Summer celebrity guest's professional boxers Zab "Super" Judah and Alex "The Brick City Bullet Perez," for being positive role models for health and fitness and supporting the City's mission to reduce childhood obesity.

"This year, we are working to provide our residents with a 'Super Healthy Summer,' focusing on fighting childhood obesity, to prevent adult illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. I am committed to providing our youngest residents with the tools by which they can live healthy lives," the Mayor said. "I want to also commend all of our partners, public and private, and the two outstanding athletes joining us today, Zab "Super" Judah and Alex "Brick City Bullet" Perez."

"This is an honor for me. Mayor Booker said it takes a lot of hard work dedication, and sacrifice to become something great. So no matter what your talent is, stick to it and be great at it," said Mr. Judah as he gave motivational remarks to the Newark youth in the audience.  The former WBA Welterweight Champion will be making his big return to the ring against Jose Armando Santa Cruz on Friday, July 16 at the Prudential Center. The fight will be broadcast live on ESPN.

"It is a blessing to be here. I did not expect this. I just have one thing to say to the youth: if you have dreams, chase them because no matter what anyone says you can accomplish any goal in life. Keep your faith and stay focused," said Alex "The Brick City Bullet" Perez. The Newark native who grew up in Baxter Terrace, Perez will be the co-feature bout on July 16 against Vincent Arroyo.

Ten-year old Bryce Turner was excited when Mayor Booker called his raffle ticket number during the event and said, "I won two tickets to see Zab Judah fight in a boxing match this Friday. I'm so excited and I'm planning to go with my Mom!"
