Martinez: Chavez Will Need DNA Identification >>>

by Suge Green | Wed. July 11, 2012

Today's Las Vegas stop of the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez press tour featured some choice comments from all the event's key personalities. Following formalities from hotel executives, event coordinators, Fernando Beltran, Lou DiBella and boxing's Bobfather, Top Rank magnate Bob Arum, Martinez trainer Pablo Sarmiento was the first to get his flurry in.

His target was Chavez Jr.'s trainer, Freddie Roach.

Pablo Sarmiento...

"I read on the internet that he (Roach) said, 'Maravilla is only speed.' You have a big problem because if you see only that, I don't see anything about Junior.

You say, 'He's only an athlete, not a boxer'

That's another problem for Freddie Roach. Junior is not an athlete and he's not a boxer!

I have several ways to fight Junior.

I don't know what Freddie Roach has in mind, but if he sends Chavez to fight probably we beat him up. If he waits to fight we, beat him twice.

Junior says the only reason for Martinez to fight him is, 'Only for the money,' that 'He didn't want to fight.'

Martinez definitely wanted the fight. Junior didn't want to fight us.

(For Chavez Jr.) the best way is to sell the advertising on the bottom of his shoes because it will be the first thing the TV will focus on. So I can tell you (this fight), it's a major problem for Junior and Freddie Roach."

After a brief statement from Roach, Chavez Sr. was next to opine from the mic...

"There's been a lot of talk about this fight from the Martinez group, and also us.

He has said, 'Julio is a maracon.'

They have talked so much bullshit. I promised Martinez the fight is going to happen. He talked so much bullshit. I gave him my word and I made it happen. Martinez has criticized my son, and said many things about my son.

We know we are going into a tough fight. We know about the qualities of Martinez - a fighter who doesn't fight for the people, he only fights for himself. For all the Mexicans, we don't like his style, the way he fights. It's a style that doesn't show well. He doesn't go forward.

He wants to say, 'Julio is afraid of him.'

Let's see on September 15 who the chicken is, and who is going to be running all over the ring. Stand and fight. Do not run on September 15."

Sergio Martinez
savored his moment at the podium...

"I want to thank HBO, Top Rank, Bob Arum, Lou DiBella and Sampson. Today is a good day. Happy birth day to Senor Chavez. It's very nice to see him in front of all of us. Tomorrow I'm going to give him a nice baby bottle for his son. I hope that he takes a picture of him today or tomorrow, because he will never be able to recognize his own son. Maybe they will have to use DNA to recognize him.

I plan to ruin Junior. I am very pleased and am motivated for this fight. Fernando Beltran always chickened out. Not only Junior, but his promoter Fernando Beltran chickened out for a long time.

If he wants to win that day and wants to make money, then he better not bet with his heart because he will lose a lot of money.

On September 15. I want to see who is running that night.

I saw in training camp he uses the bag to exercise. Maybe he should bring the bag to the fight because that's the only way he can win.

I want everyone to see hm well because they will never recognize him after the fight. Happy birthday to Senor Chavez, it was nice to see him blow out his candles."

Chavez Jr. had the last word before Bob Arum wrapped it up...

"First of all i would like to thank everybody for being here. I would like to thank Wynn Resort, and of course HBO and all the sponsors who came forth in support of the fight. I would like to thank God because he gave me this great opportunity to fight this great champion, and to have this great opportunity to shut his mouth.

He doesn't believe in my talent and on September 15, he underestimates me he's gonna have a real surprise. They say after the fight he will not be Maravilla, he will be Mara-nina. I'm very excited honestly. I'm going to prepare myself very hard. Don't have any doubts that on September 15, I'm going to beat Maravilla. I would like to talk much, but on September 15, I'm going to speak in the ring and I'm going to knock him out."

It's going to be great to see Martinez get his title back, I'm really looking forward to this. Chavez is much improved, and he'll be a big monster on fight night but, Martinez still has too much for Junior.
