Kassim Ouma Fights Keith Holmes for the UBO Title…!!!

Tue. April 27, 2010

Keith Holmes (41-5, 25 KOs) will have his hands full on May 29 at the DC Armory in Washington D.C., as Titanium Promotions has confirmed that the former WBC World champion will take on former IBF World champion Kassim “The Dream” Ouma (26-7-1, 16 KOs). The two will clash for the vacant UBO International Middleweight championship as co-feature to the Demarcus Corley vs. Jermain White UBO World Light Welterweight title fight.

Ouma, a native of Uganda residing in the USA for the last twelve years, made his professional debut in 1998. He beat a long line of quality opponents such as Alex Bunema, Kuvanych Toygonbayev, Tony Marshall, former WBO champion Verno Phillips, Jason Papillion, Angel Hernandez and Carlos Bojorquez on his way to a world title eliminator against Juan Carlos Candelo in January 2004.

Ouma beat Candelo in impressive fashion to line up an October rematch with former foe Verno Phillips, who had become a two time world champion by winning the IBF crown in June. Ouma and Phillips fought at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, with the challenger taking the world title on a close but unanimous decision. Read more »

OtG Team on Ruiz Retirement…!!!

Champ,

You righted a lot of perceived wrongs with the way you fought during the last few years. Even though the fights weren’t televised in the U.S., the real fans and observers…the ones who follow everything, noticed.

You deserve and earned respect for listening to the people, and for putting your safety and career on the line to prove it.

When you reflect upon your accomplishments as a professional boxer, also allow yourself to feel a bit of satisfaction knowing many of your harshest longtime critics were glued to a small screen watching you fight overseas before it was all said and done.

What those former critics and boxing fans around the world witnessed was the class and character of John Ruiz that has long been known outside of the ring, manifest itself inside of the ring.

We are glad to say we’re some of the people you won over in the end…and you made a few new “John Ruiz fans,” on the OnThEGRiND BOXiNG Team.

Happy retirement.

Former Heavyweight Champion of the World John “The Quiet Man” Ruiz Retires…!!!

Mon Apr. 26, 2010
Las Vegas, Nv.

After a professional career spanning 18 years, highlighted by becoming the first and only Heavyweight World Champion of Latino heritage, two-time world champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz today announced his retirement from the ring.

Ruiz (44-9-1, 30 KOs) defeated three world champions – Evander Holyfield, Hasim Rahman and Tony Tucker – as well as top contenders such as Andrew Golota, Fres Oquendo, Jameel McCline and Kirk Johnson. Six of John’s nine career losses were to world champions.

“I’ve had a great career but it’s time for me to turn the page and start a new chapter of my life,” Ruiz said. “It’s sad that my final fight didn’t work out the way I wanted, but, hey, that’s boxing. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished with two world titles, 12 championship fights, and being the first Latino Heavyweight Champion of the World. I fought anybody who got in the ring with me and never ducked anyone. Now, I’m looking forward to spending more time with my family. Read more »

One Round at a Time: Adamek Decisions Arreola…!!!

One Round at a Time: Adamek Decisions Arreola
The IBF International Champion successfully invades the IE.

Sun. April 25, 2010
by Suge Green

On The Cards…
Judge Tony Crebs 114-114, Judge Joseph Pasquale 117-111, Judge Barry Druxman 115-113. Your winner by way of majority decision and STILL IBF International Heavyweight Champion Tomasz Adamek.

1.) Arreola. The hometown fighter landing big power shots. Adamek shows a willingness to trade at times, but doesn’t get the best of the exchanges.

2.) Arreola. This wasn’t a big round. Arreola is controlling the pace, stalking and landing. Adamek shows he can find success with body flurries and moving, but has used this tactic sparingly thus far.

3.) Adamek. The Pole is using movement, backing away and boxing. Adamek now appears to be dictating a slow pace, but still shows early signs of fatigue from the movement.

4.) Arreola stalked and hurt Adamek. Adamek boxed and scored points. Read more »

One Round at a Time: Kessler Beats Froch

One Round at a Time: Kessler Beats Froch
The Viking Warrior conquers the Cobra in the Super Six World Boxing Classic.

Sun. April 25, 2010
by Suge Green

On The Cards…

Judge Cavalleri 115-113, Judge Van de Weile 116-112, Judge Tillman 117-111. Your winner by way of unanimous decision and NEW WBC Super Middleweight Champion of the World Mikkel Kessler.

1.) Hard round to score with both fighters feeling one another out. Kessler seemed to have control of the middle moments of the first round. Froch controlled the opening and closing moments of the round

2.) Another difficult to score round. Kessler may have edged it. These fighters are VERY well matched.

3.) Surprise…hard round to score. Kessler controlled the first two minutes, while Froch had the last minute more dramatically. I hate trying to score this fight.

4.) Kessler. First clear round for either fighter. Kessler has been working the body the whole fight and it is becoming more apparent to Froch in this round. It should be interesting to see if this body work pays off late. Froch apppears to be doing most of the boxing here, as Kessler follows him around the ring. Read more »

Adamek vs. Arreola: At a Glance…!!!

Sat. April 24, 2010
by Jesse Rican - OnThEGRiND BOXiNG New York

Tomasz Adamek will put his IBF International Heavyweight Championship on the line tonight at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, Calif. as part of HBO World Championship Boxing’s live double-header.

Arreola has natural ability that can only be compared to a handful of boxers, and enough power to KO any heavyweight if he catches them at the right time. That said, he is still known for coming in weighing over 250 pounds, and eating cheeseburgers at midnight. He also has yet to go 12 rounds with a boxer, and it’s questionable whether or not he can (If the fight against Vitali would have went two extra rounds we might have seen Arreola hit the canvas).

On the other side of the ring will be Tomasz Adamek, who has recently moved from cruiserweight to heavyweight. He took a loss to Chad Dawson a few fights back, but let’s not forget he had Buddy McGirt with him that night. Read more »

Alfredo Angulo Fined…!!!

Ontario, CA

The undercard weigh-in for this Saturday’s “Ring of Fire” boxing show was held at the Hilton Ontario Airport Hotel this afternoon. The Jr. Middleweight co-feature was supposed to be first on scale however; Alfredo Angulo failed to show at the scheduled report time. Rumors quickly began circulating about Angulo being overweight. Members of Angulo’s camp present at the weigh in claimed he was stuck in traffic.

After waiting more than 1 hour the commission allowed the rest of the undercard to weigh in. While waiting, Joel Julio calmly passed the time talking with his camp. Angulo showed up 1-3/4 hours late.

Somber looking, Angulo was first on the scale, coming in at 153 -3/4 lbs. Joel Julio, looking amazingly fit, weighed in at 153 -1/4 lbs. Anthony Hamm, Julio’s trainer, joyously cried out “And that’s without missing one meal!”

The California Boxing Commission fined Angulo $15,000 for being late to the weigh-in. It was agreed by all parties that the fine money would be paid to Joel Julio.

Shannon Briggs Sends a Message to WBA Heavyweight Champion David Haye…!!!

Hello David,

I see that Wladimir Klitschko put out a video on You Tube claiming that now he wants to fight you. Apparently, he sees an opportunity to fight another “smaller” guy because you came from the cruiserweights.

David, I’ve been in this game a long time. Before you waste a lot of your precious time on them, please just realize that you don’t have to be at the mercy of the Klitschkos. I’ve already gone down that road and been tortured by the games they play. You give them every advantage they want and they just keep backing out.

Don’t waste your time.

You are a proven and legitimate heavyweight champion now. You beat Nikolay Valuev and now John Ruiz. Let’s you and me have a real, action-packed heavyweight title fight. I’d love to go Europe and fight you.

The smaller divisions are for showing skills. The heavyweight division is for punching power and all-out wars. People want to see Lennox Lewis and George Foreman type power. They don’t want to see the Klitschkos do their punch and clinch, run-around-and-dance, octopus fighting that they do. They hurt the division with their safety-first styles. Neither one of them put it on the line. The fans want to see knockouts.

We don’t have to deal with the Klitschkos hand-picking opponents and fighting only in Germany with their boring styles. Let’s you and me go to war and give the fans what they want from heavyweight boxing.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Shannon Briggs

Two-Time Heavyweight Champion

Man on a Mission: Yahya McClain…!!!

Thu. April 15, 2010
by Rev. Ringside

RR: Yahya what makes you want to be champion again?

YM: I’ve been sitting around for 10 years and been watching the Cruiserweight division and I don’t like sitting around on the sidelines, so I decided to re-enter the boxing game. I was training guys 10-15 years younger than myself, and would spar with them and whip them. The art of boxing isn’t being taught anymore and I am here to save the CW division. I feel that I am the “YASTER” and I have the knowledge, from both sides of the fence, from being a fighter, a trainer and promoter, so I’ve decided to use that same ideology that I used to help others and apply it to myself.

RR: Who are your major supporters in this comeback attempt?

YM: My wife, my small circle of friends and my community. See these guys are people that will tell you the truth no matter what, they’ll tell you the butt naked truth.

RR: So what are your plans on fighting in the cruiserweight division?

YM: I have no thoughts on fighting any champion out there. I feel that I can beat any top 10 CW out there. I have an old friend and we’ve kind of fell out and were not close like we used to be, he told me once if I crack the top 15 he’s going to have to come see me. Read more »

Open Letter To Attorney General Tom Corbett…!!!

Dear Attorney General Tom Corbett,

This is an open letter to you and the boxing media in regards to your prosecution of Damon Feldman and the Celebrity Boxing Federation. As a member of the boxing community, I want to ask you about the reason for these criminal proceedings.

Let me start off by discussing my past dealings with Mr. Feldman and the Celebrity Boxing Federation. I have covered many of their “fights” dating back to the beginning, and have helped out behind the scenes. I have never once heard of Mr. Feldman proclaimming that these were real fights, contrarily I have heard him describe the events as sports entertainment.

You do know what sports entertainment is don’t you?

The most popular example is pro wrestling, which notably is completely legal in Pa. In these events, like the CBF’s events, the winner is predetermined.

It is unclear what the problem is with the CBF’s brand of sports entertainment.

It is also worth pointing out that there was always medical supervision on the premesis. I remember being in the locker room when Mr. Feldman pulled John Wayne Bobbitt from a fight card because his blood pressure was too high.

Do you know what kind of long term damage it can do to a promoter’s reputation when the main event is canceled mid-card? I am sure you do.

Feldman considered the safety of the participants in the CBF more important than the reputation of the organization itself, and more important than his reputation as a promoter.

In closing, I feel you owe it to the voters and the fans of Celebrity Boxing Federation to come on OnThEGRiND BOXiNG Radio to discuss these allegations more thoroughly. You will have the chance to explain why you are not cleaning up the streets, but instead focusing on policing the entertainment choices of individuals in your jurisdiction.

Thank you for your time Sir, and I look forward to speaking with you.

Sincerely,
BigTime Tim Kudgis
