Perez Fights Twice in One Night…!!!

Perez Fights Twice in One Night…!!!
Yanjing Fight Night: Two Fights, One Night - Perez is looking to make history.

Unbeaten Cuban heavyweight Mike Perez is promising double trouble on the Yanjing Fight Night in Limerick on Saturday as he bids to enter the record books by fighting twice on the same night in officially recorded professional bouts.

Perez features on the undercard of Andy Lee’s clash with former European Champion Mamadou Thiam and he’s hoping to make the boxing word sit up and take notice with an incredible double.

Perez will open the show on Saturday night when he takes on Latvia’s Edgar Kalnars and should everything go smoothly for the Cork based southpaw in that contest then he will be back in the ring for a second time in a matter of hours when he faces Tomas Mrazek from the Czech Reublic.

Perez’s participation in the second bout is subject to a medical examination immediately following the first bout by the Boxing Union of Ireland’s ringside doctor but the man himself sees little difficulty with the task at hand.

“I think it’s a great idea and when Brian Peters suggested it I jumped at the opportunity because I have had over a year out of the ring with an injury so I am looking to keep as busy as possible now and it doesn’t get any better than having two fights in one night.”

Peters believes that the Perez double adds further spice to Saturday night’s undercard. “Mike is chomping at the bit to fight because he has been out of the ring for so long and it’s been very frustrating for him,” said Peters. “He’s an incredible raw talent and he wants to start fulfilling his potential and shake up the heavyweight division and pulling off this feat on Saturday night will certainly cause a stir.

“Previously heavyweight legends such as Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey and George Foreman have fought more than once on the same night but they were always only exhibition bouts and were never counted as official contests Read more »

Vazquez Jr. Makes First Defense…!!!

Vazquez Jr. Makes First Defense…!!!

Vazquez, Jr. defends his title for the first time against Bedak.

Tue. May 11, 2010
Hoboken, NJ

Boricua star Wilfredo “WV2” Vazquez, Jr. makes his first WBO Junior Featherweight title defense May 29 against unbeaten, No. 1 contender Zsolt “Mr. Lefthook” Bedak, headlining the “Undefeated Champions” pay per view event in the 12-round main event, airing live in the United States from Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

“Undefeated Champions,” presented by PR Best Boxing in association with All Star Boxing, features three world title bouts. It is being distributed in the United States by Integrated Sports Media for live viewing at 9 PM/ET – 6 PM/PT on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, DIRECTV, and DISH Network, for a suggested retail price of only $34.95.

The Ring’s No. 9 rated Vazquez (18-0-1, 15 KOs), the first Puerto Rican world champion who is also the son of former world champion, doesn’t feel like others that defending a championship belt is tougher than winning a title for the first time. The 25-year-old Vazquez captured the WBO crown this past February, stopping Marvin Sonsona in the fourth round.

“I’m more relaxed now,” he said. “There’s less pressure but I’m working even harder. It’s going to be hard for somebody to take my belt away. Being world champion like my father is rare. Who could believe it? It’s something very special in our lives.”

The 26-year-old Bedak (14-0-1, 12 KOs), a native Hungarian now fighting out of Germany, captured the WBO European and WBO Inter-Continental super bantamweight titles last year.

WBA Lightweight Championship: Moses vs. Acosta…!!!

The Champion defends against the Interim-Champion in Namibia

Tue. May 11, 2010
Windhoek, Namibia

Undefeated World Boxing Association lightweight champion Paulus Moses (25-0, 17 KOs) will defend his title in the capital city of his native Namibia on May 29 in a showdown against WBA interim lightweight champion Miguel Acosta (26-3-2, 20 KOs).

Don King Productions won the right to promote the match in a WBA purse bid of $150,000 and will present the event in association with Namibia-based Nestor Sunshine Promotions. Per WBA rules, the champion will received 55% of the purse and the interim champion 45%.

Moses, who was born in Okapya and now resides in Windhoek, traveled to Japan in 2008 and defeated then-champion Yusuke Kobori to win the WBA lightweight crown.

He successfully defended the title on July 25 at the Winkhoek Country Club Resort when he won a unanimous decision over Takehiro Shimada. Read more »

Hernandez Ready For Manfredo…!!!

Hernandez Ready For Manfredo…!!!
The IBO Middleweight Title is on the line May 22 at Mohegan Sun.

Veteran Angel “El Toro” Hernandez is arguably, pound-for-pound, one of the toughest boxers in the business. The Mexican native, fighting out of Chicago, has parlayed impressive back-to-back performances into a May 22 title fight against Peter Manfredo, Jr. at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut.

“It’s all in his nickname – ‘Toro’ means bull,” Angel’s trainer “Fearless” Fernando Hernandez describes his fighter. “He is a charger who has evolved into a good boxer. He’s very tough!”

The 34-year-old Hernandez (30-7, 17 KOs) has taken a different road to his upcoming battle against Manfredo (34-6, 18 KOs) for the vacant IBO middleweight championship. His last two fights have been wins against multiple world title challenger Antwun Echols (31-11-4), last August when Echols failed to answer the bell for the seventh round, and a 10-round decision against then hot prospect James McGirt Jr. (19-1-1) on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

During the course of his 14-year pro career, the battle-tested Hernandez has also defeated Randall, Larry Marks, Victor Rosado, J.C. Candelo and Leonard Townsend, in addition to having fought Kassim Ouma, Raymond Joval, Vanes Martirosyan and Rhoshii Wells.

Hernandez, who will be making his debut fighting for promoter Boxing 360, feels that his time has finally come. “This opportunity is long overdue,” Angel said about his first fight in New England. “I’ve proven myself but haven’t had a world title shot since I fought Winky Wright (LDEC12) in 2003. Williams & Cintron Punch it Out…!!!

Williams & Cintron Punch it Out
Saturday on HBO’s Boxing After Dark, Paul Williams looks to solidify his position in the upper echelon of boxing’s pound-for-pound rankings, the formidable Kermit Cintron stands in his way.

Fri. May 7, 2010
by Alex McIntyre

Paul “The Punisher” Williams takes on Kermit Cintron Sat.night at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. to headline HBO’s Boxing After Dark. Williams intends to be victorious against Cintron, then immediately secure a super-fight with Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

With Mayweather clearly in his sights, Williams had strong criticism for the welterweights that observers would rank over him last week, when he picked Mosely to beat Mayweather.

“The two proclaimed best welterweights in the world fighting (last) Saturday night aren’t the best welterweights in the world, Paul Williams is the best!” said Williams.

“They feared fighting me even when I was a two-time World Welterweight Champion. I’m saying it now loud and clear, after I beat Kermit Cintron on May 8 at the Home Depot Center, I demand the winner get into the ring with me. If not, they better not say they’re the best Read more »

Antonio Margarito Fights On…!!!

Antonio Margarito Fights On
The controversial former champion tries to fight his way out of hot water. Mosley, Cintron & the California State Athletic Commission all speak.
Fri. May 7, 2010
by Suge Green

While most boxing fans are tuned in to pound-for-pound front-runner Paul “The Punisher” Williams’ light middleweight clash with former IBF Welterweight Champion Kermit Cintron Sat. May 8, approximately 1300 miles away, two less heralded former welterweight champions square off in their native Mexico.

Whether by design or by luck, the lights and cameras of HBO will be strategically placed throughout the state-of-the-art Home Depot Center, in Carson, Calif., to capture the aforementioned contest, allowing “The Tijuana Tornado” Antonio Margarito’s comeback to go ahead against former IBA Welterweight Champion Roberto Garcia at the San Marcos Fair in Aguascalientes, Mexico with relatively little public ridicule or notice. Margarito vs. Garcia headlines Top Rank’s Latin Fury 14.

The lack of PPV purchasers who can name the headliners of the preceding 13 Latin Fury cards indicate it’s a safe bet that “The Tijuana Tornado” will touch down both off of the weather map, and off of the general public’s radar. Read more »

McCloskey Defends European Crown at the King’s Hall…!!!

European Light Welterweight King Paul McCloskey has no intention of abdicating his throne when he faces mandatory challenger Giuseppe Lauri at The King’s Hall, Belfast on Friday, June 11th. The undefeated Dungiven southpaw stretched his perfect record to 20 straight wins last time out with an impressive stoppage victory over Daniel Rasilla to capture the European crown and he says he’s ready to fulfill another career milestone by headlining at the King’s Hall next month.

“To headline a bill at a legendary venue like The King’s Hall is a dream come true,” said McCloskey. “It’s such a historic venue and all the top boxers have fought there down through the years so to headline a bill there will be special.

“I fought on the undercard there when John Duddy beat Howard Eastman and I actually got to make my pro debut there in 2005 so it is nice to be able to go back there in the main event on a big night of boxing.”

McCloskey however is under no illusions that experienced Italian Giuseppe Lauri will be out to spoil the party and says he won’t be taking anything for granted. “He is a tough, experienced customer and has only been beaten by the top guys like Ricky Hatton and Junior Witter. He has been at this level for a long time so he knows what it’s all about and I know it won’t be easy but as long as I perform to my best on the night then I’m confident that I’ll beat him.”

McCloskey says he’s determined not to be sidetracked by any talk regarding a possible World title fight in the near future. “If I keep wining then I’m sure the World title shot will come my way but I can’t afford to look beyond my next fight. I just have to win, and win in style to keep climbing the rankings and then hopefully a world title opportunity will present itself in the next 12 months.” Read more »
