Butler Gets Fighting Spirit for Prizefighter From His Army Brothers…!!!
Danny Butler is being inspired to win the Prizefighter Light-Middleweights this Friday by the fighting spirit of his brothers, who are serving with the Army in Afghanistan.
Butler, who backs the Help for Heroes charity, has two brothers – Adam and Martin – serving in the Army and says he will give the charity a portion of the £32,000 winning prize if he triumphs in the tenth Prizefighter competition at the York Hall in Bethnal Green.
The Bristol boxer, who is stepping down a division for his second Prizefighter, says he wants to win the knockout competition for brother Adam, who is currently serving in Afghanistan.
He said: “If I win Prizefighter I will donate some of the money to Help for Heroes, which is a great charity which I support.
“I’ve got two brothers who have been out in Afghanistan.
One of them, Martin, has only recently got back and the other, Adam, is still out there.

Al Bernstein Emcee for Joe Gans Event…!!!
Hall of Fame broadcaster Al Bernstein, will serve as master of ceremonies Friday, February 26th at an event celebrating the life and legacy of Joe Gans, the first African American world boxing champion.
Al will join other athletes and sports celebrities at the Sports Legends Museum at Camden Yards in Baltimore to raise money to erect a statue of Gans at the Great Blacks Museum. Ticket information can be obtained at www.JoeGans.com or by calling 410-727-1539.
This appearance is one of the activities this year marking Bernstein’s 30th anniversary as a national boxing broadcaster. “I want this year of commemoration for me to be focused on events honoring the people who are most important in the sport—the boxers. They are the ones who sacrifice so much and work so hard to provide excitement in the ring,” Al said. “No one deserves to be recognized more than Joe Gans who battled racial bias and other great fighters to become the first African American champion. It’s a joy to participate in this event,” Al added.

Bernard Dunne Announces Retirement…!!!
Bernard Dunne:
After a lot of thought and reflection the time has finally come to bring my career as a professional boxer to an end.
For the past 25 years boxing has been my life but now it is time for a fresh start.
The easiest thing in the world would have been to climb through the ropes and fight again but honesty has always been very important to me and I am being honest to myself, to my family and to my supporters with this decision.
The great Irish fans that travelled on the journey to a world title belt with me deserved better than to pay their hard earned cash just to see me go through the motions. I could never do that to them.
Thankfully I have realised all my dreams and achieved all my goals since I followed my dad into boxing. To win a world title is something I will never forget and something I am so proud of and I would like to thank everyone who helped make that possible.
This is a sad day for me and for my family but it is also an exciting day and a new start in my life, one I am really looking forward to. Read more »

Prince Arron is confident his height and reach will see him cause an upset in the
Prizefighter Light-Middleweights tournament at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Friday, February 26.
The Droylsden fighter, whose real name is Arron Jones, is aiming to win three, three round bouts in one thrilling night of boxing and bank the £32,000 prize money live on Sky Sports.
The 22–year-old is one of the underdogs to win the eight-man tournament that features former British and Commonwealth champions.
But he said: “I’m very tall for a light-middle, 6ft 3inches, and I might go up to middleweight when the time is right. My height will be an advantage for this competition.
“As a boxer I’m tall and rangey with fast hands. My height and reach will cause anyone problems. There’s a lot of experienced boxers in this but anything can happen over three rounds. Read more »
O’Meara Inspired by Mayweather Sparring Session…!!!
Steve O’Meara says he has got nothing to fear ahead of the Prizefighter Light-Middleweights tournament - thanks to a sparring session with Floyd Mayweather Jnr.
Unbeaten O’Meara is one of eight boxers who will be trying to win three, three round bouts in one night to pocket the £32,000 prize money at the York Hall in Bethnal Green on Friday, February 26.
O’Meara claims he has been transformed as a fighter since sparring with American Mayweather, a former world champion at five weight divisions.
But the 26-year-old from West Drayton, who has won all of his ten fights since turning professional nearly two years ago, admits he was unhappy with his last fight against Stourbridge’s Kevin McCauley in September immediately after sparring with Mayweather.
O’Meara blames jetlag after getting back from working with Mayweather in Las Vegas on under-performing against McCauley and is determined to show what he has learnt in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

When Billy Schwer challenged Colin ‘Dynamo’ Dunne, for his WBU Lightweight World Title back in October 2000, the thousands of fans that packed Wembley Conference Centre were treated to one of the greatest British, if not world, fights of all time.
Right from the opening bell the Lightweight division’s two best fighters, of the time, stood toe to toe exchanging power punch after power punch. Schwer was the first to land a truly hurtful shot in the first round, a solid right to the jaw which clearly rocked Dunne. But Dunne came straight back at Schwer landing a couple of crackers and consequently won the round.
In the middle rounds it seemed that Schwer had managed to secure most due to landing more quality shots. But by the seventh he was starting to show signs of fading and ‘Dynamo’ started to control the proceedings. Read more »

Irish boxing had a vintage year in 2009; Bernard Dunne participated in Ireland’s first world title fight in 13 years (he would go on to win the title in impressive fashion against Ricardo Cordoba), Paul McCloskey and Matt Macklin both lifted European Titles and there was also a record amount of cards staged in Ireland this year. Eddie Hyland – Oisin Fagan got the nod for Irish fight of the year by most of the Irish boxing public, however there were two men who I feel deserved that accolade not once but twice! Anthony Fitzgerald and Robert Long participated in two classic blood and guts battles which ended with each fighter taking a loss. Long took the first fight, a six rounder, while Fitzgerald applied lessons learned in the gym to take the second fight.
While their first encounter was fought in front of a small crowd filled with mostly friends of the fighters, the buzz it generated meant that the second fight in what’s sure to be a trilogy, had to take place in a bigger venue. The National Stadium in Dublin, the world’s first and only purpose built boxing stadium, would be the stage for the second chapter of their battle. One man present that night was Brian Peters, Ireland’s premier boxing promoter. I have to say that aside from when Bernard Dunne fights I have never seen him so engrossed in a fight. It was clear to me that Brian would have to have the winner on his next show. Read more »
