Steven Ormond Impresses & Riddick Bowe Loves The Fans…Friday Night in Westbury

This past Friday night I had the privilege of attending the action packed boxing event that took place in Westbury, Long Island. At this local DiBella card, I found myself most impressed by Ireland’s own Steven Ormond.
Steven’s opponent was Sergi Ganjelashvili who had a record of 4-2-1, and from the opening bell, Ormond proved to be too much. Steve’s impressive speed and power won him every round decisively, and proved that he was just the better boxer. Every Judge scored a 59-54 scorecard, because of a one point deduction on Steve for hitting after the bell.
I’m not sure if it was Ormond’s own speed that got the best of him, or if he just took it upon himself to let the other boxer that he was there to fight. Perhaps it was Steve’s way of letting Sergi know that he meant business, but it was an unnecessary three punches, and he deserved to have the point taken away.
Another boxer I wanted to talk about wasn’t on the fight card at all, but instead was outside in the lobby taking pictures, and giving autographs to anybody that asked. The fans in Westbury no doubt were thrilled to meet the great Riddick Bowe. At forty-one years old, and only one loss on his record, it was truly an honor to meet the Champ. He gave me a hand shake, and said that he’s planning to get back in the ring. I wish Bowe nothing but the best.
I will also like to take this time to mention that Saturday June 13th at Giant StadiumIn New Jersey, Riddick Bowe will be doing an autograph signing from 11am - 3pm. I encourage everyone in the area to go meet this very personable legend in person.

You are lucky Rican that you live in the Big Apple. I would love to meet Bowe, I had faith in him November of 1992, and I’ll be damned if he didnt come through. In fact, a cartoon I did of Bowe-Holyfield I was published in Bert Sugar’s “Boxing Illustrated” a month before the Great Superfight. What a 10th round and what a Trilogy.
