Steven Ormond Impresses & Riddick Bowe Loves The Fans…Friday Night in Westbury

Tuesday June 9th, 2009
by Jesse Rican - OnThEGRiND BoXiNG New York

This past Friday night I had the privilege of attending the action packed boxing event that took place in Westbury, Long Island. At this local DiBella card, I found myself most impressed by Ireland’s own Steven Ormond.

Steven’s opponent was Sergi Ganjelashvili who had a record of 4-2-1, and from the opening bell, Ormond proved to be too much. Steve’s impressive speed and power won him every round decisively, and proved that he was just the better boxer. Every Judge scored a 59-54 scorecard, because of a one point deduction on Steve for hitting after the bell. Read more »

Manny Siaca Calls Out IBO Champ Anthony Mundine

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Former WBA super middleweight champion Manny Siaca is offering present IBO title-holder Anthony Mundine an opportunity to avenge one of his three pro losses, even if it means fighting Mundine again in his hometown of Sydney.

Five years ago, Siaca captured the WBA super middleweight belt from Mundine, by way of 12-round decision, in Sydney.

The 33-year-old Siaca (22-6, 19 KOs) said his experiment as a light heavyweight is in the past and he’s ready to take on Mundine (36-3, 23 KOs) again. “Since I beat him,” the Puerto Rican boxer said, “he’s fought nobody, only bums, other than Mikkel Kessler, who beat him, too. Mundine is fooling the people of Australia. In 2007, his people talked about him fighting me but they thought it was too risky. Danny Green pulled out of a fight against me, too. I beat Mundine in his backyard and I’ll do it again.”

McCloskey’s French Connection The Key To European Glory

Tuesday June 9th, 2009

Paul McCloskey will finally get his chance at a European title on July 3rd but the undefeated Derry man will have to concede home advantage by travelling to France to battle it out with former World Champion Souleymane M’baye for the vacant European Light Welterweight title.

McCloskey was made an offer that manager and trainer John Breen admitted was simply too good to refuse to travel to Paris to take on M’baye. “They made us a very, very good offer to go to France but Paul’s one of those guys who has no problems going into the lions den,” said Breen.

The fight will take place at the Palais des Sport Marcel Cerdan in the Paris suburb of Levallois-Perret in what is effectively M’baye’s hometown. “They could fight in M’baye’s front room as far as I’m concerned and Paul would still beat him. I’ve said all along he’s a World Champion in the making and he’ll prove that again that winning a European title on the road. Read more »
