Last Friday night I had the pleasure of attending the boxing event in Yonkers, New York put on by O’Shea Brothers Promotions. After witnessing a wonderful fight card, I found that two boxers in particular stood out above the rest, Vincent Arroyo and Nydia Felician.
Since OnThEGRiND BoXiNG has been wondering for some time now when we shall have the next pretty female pugilistic prospect on our hands, I would like to start with Nydia. Although her pro debut ended in a draw, she fought her heart out and I walked away very impressed. My one and only concern from viewing the fight is that she seemed to tire rather quickly, running out of gas in the 2nd round. Had the fight been scheduled for a few rounds more, I’m sure she would have a lost. All that being said though, during her first round and moments of the next three she displayed some impressive speed and power. We also must take into consideration that Nydia is only 19 years old, and can only improve from here on out… plus she’s Puerto Rican, and gorgeous!
Next I would like to give my opinion on Vincent Arroyo. Vincent is a promising young fighter who defeated top prospect Daniel Jacobs in the amateurs…and he made sure I knew about it. When I asked him if he had any words following his victory over Roberto Acevedo he said, “I beat Daniel Jacobs. Remember that I beat Daniel Jacobs,” as he was leaving the ring.
Vincent had Acevedo so badly beaten that he refused to come out of his corner following the 6th round. Even though it was an impressive display from Arroyo, one cannot help but wonder if he deserved a better opponent. With Arroyo’s record of 8-0, I expect to see him stack up a few more easy victories until he fights somebody that would be considered a “live body.” Look for Roberto Acevedo to appear soon on Showtime’s “Next Generation,” television series.
