Floyd Mayweather Jr. - Juan Manuel Marquez Presser

Thursday May 21st, 2009
by Jesse Rican

After unsuccessfully trying to get into the Mayweather vs. Marquez press conference on Tuesday May 19th, 2009 (next time Timmy can show me how its done) following a mix up, I joined the massive number of fans outside the Empire State Building in New York City waiting for the boxers to arrive. Unable to snap any photos of Juan because of how quickly he made his way toward the building, I stood in wait for Floyd Maweather Jr., and as two Hummers pulled up on the side, Hundreds of fans started rushing the vehicles, not even giving Floyd a chance to step out.

While security was keeping fans off of the vehicle, Floyd stepped outside of the car into the swarm of spectators trying to get pictures and autographs. I will give Floyd credit where he deserves it, he signed autographs and stopped for the few photos that time allowed. Due to the huge crowd, I was only able to snap one decent [Editor's Note: We need to talk about the meaning of that word] picture of him, it was during the time he stopped and talked to Sports New York, a New York station that is most famous for showing Mets games.

After the press conference was over I received a phone call from someone in the press that made it in, and he commented that, “It was one of the worst press conferences ever.” There was absolutely no trash talking whatsoever from either side. I was told that Mayweather was actually giving Marquez credit, and said that he’s a warrior and should not be taken lightly. This leads me to believe that Floyd is receiving a lot of harsh criticism for taking on a smaller opponent, and his best option at this point is to give Marquez large amounts of credit, in an attempt to convince the press that a win over Marquez will be an impressive one.

It looks like the Joke is on Mayweather though, because after Marquez beats him in twelve rounds, Mayweather will wish he picked a larger opponent. Marquez is a warrior who has been actively fighting, while Floyd is coming back after a one year and seven month absence. Keep this in mind when picking your winner.

Juan Manuel Marquez:
I know as all you people know I have a tough fight. I’ve prepared myself very hard mentally and physically for this fight… I don’t like easy fights. I prepare myself very hard for this fight because it is important for my career and for my life. I tell everyone I don’t like talking outside the ring. I let my fists do the talking.”

Floyd Mayweather Jr.:
“I’m back in the sport of boxing. I’m hear to dominate and its not going to be an easy task. Marquez is a tough warrior. he represents Mexico to the fullest. i take my hat off to him and give him mu utmost respect. We take one day at a time. I’ve been working out for a couple months. training camp has been going tremendous. I’m in good shape right now. I weigh like 147-146. so everything is been going great, everything has been going well. to be the best you have to beat the best. i feel that Marquez has been in the dark for a long time. some one has to give him that opportunity. So why not me. hey try to say someone took my spot, but I take my hat off to all fighters. I have nothing but the utmost respect for fighters. Hopefully July 18th we can give nothing but blood sweat and tears.”

Thanks Dr. B
