Sweeney’s Irish Farewell

Monday May 18th, 2009
by Jonny Stapleton

Michael Sweeney will bid farewell to Ireland with a fight in his home county this weekend before he pursues the American Dream and makes his Banner Promotions debut in Laredo Texas on June 19.

After fighting on the Dolphil Promotions show in Castlebar this Saturday night the teak tough Ballinrobe man will develop his career in the States, and according to his manager, Tommy Egan the next time he returns to fight in Ireland it will be as a star.

Sweeney signed one of the most lucrative deals in Irish boxing when joining forces with, Art Pelullo and Banner Promotions as a result of a unique agreement between Irish promoter, Tommy Egan and Banner Promotions. He will make his Banner debut on the under card of the Fernando Beltran versus Monty Meza Clay IBF Latino Featherweight Title fight live on ESPN.

For now however the fighter is just anxious to get back into the ring this weekend in preparation for American unveiling. The pugilist, who knocked Andy Lee out as an amateur, claims there is great interest in the DolPhil promoted fight night and stressed he is eager to put on show in what will be his last fight on home soil for the foreseeable future.

“To be honest I am just looking forward to getting back in the ring this weekend and keeping busy after that. I am thrilled to be going to America and I couldn’t ask for a better team. I have the dream team. Arthur Pelullo and Banner Promotions are one of the biggest promoters in the world. You couldn’t ask for a better Tommy Egan he has been brilliant to me and now I have an Olympic champion Michael Carruth in my corner. But at present I am just focused on getting the job done this weekend. I have to win and improve my record and I want to put on a good farewell show,” Sweeney explained.

There is large interest in the show and by all accounts Sweeney can expect a great send off.

“Fair play to Phil Sutcliffe and Don O’Leary for letting me fight on the show. There seems to be a lot of interest in the event and I am expecting over 200 of my own fans to be there. I am in great shape now and things seem to be clicking in the gym. Hopefully the Mayo crowd will see the best of me before I begin fighting in the states,” he added before stressing he will be back.

“I will fight in Ireland again and hopefully in Mayo, but for now I will fight in America. I will follow Tommy Egan’s and Banner Promotion’s plan for me. I am not afraid of any fighter and would take on anyone but Tommy has it all laid out for me and I will follow that path.”
