The Wallstreet Report

Monday May 4th, 2009
By James Thurston Wallstreet III

Boxing is like any other business. People invest in fighters and promotional companies to make a profit. Whether you are on the front line in the boxing community, or just make wagers on fight night you are still investing in the sport one way or another. I am here to help you decide if you are investing in the next Microsoft or the next Enron (since we all know boxing to be filled with shady businessmen). Here is a list I have complied of stocks from last weekends fights:

Manny Pacquiao: He is by far the Microsoft of the boxing industry. After suffering losses in the beginning of his career, and to Erik Morales at that…he has rebounded nicely and has soared through the sky in value. I myself have made some great investments on the fight with Oscar and Ricky. Though this cash cow could be in for a recession if matched up with Floyd or Miguel Read more »

Storm Center Warning: “Irish Lightning” Heading East…Unbeaten Dean Byrne fighting May 15th in Yonkers

May 4th, 2009
Los Angeles

Fresh off of his impressive victory last Friday night in Las Vegas, unbeaten light welterweight sensation Dean “Irish Lightning” Byrne is heading East to fight in New York for the first time May 15 against an opponent to be determined on the O’Shea Brothers Boxing-promoted card in Yonkers.

Crumlin-native Byrne, 24, floored Mexican southpaw Jose Reynoso (10-3, 1 KO) three times in the first four-rounds en route to an entertaining 8-round win by decision at South Point Hotel Casino to keep his perfect pro record intact (11-0, 4 KOs).

Byrne, trained by the great Freddie Roach, has found a home at the famed Wild Card Boxing Gym in Los Angeles, where Dean has benefited from sparring with Manny Pacquiao, Amir Khan and Juan Marquez. A veteran of more than 200 amateur fights, Byrne was an Irish National champion who turned pro in Australia, capturing the New South Wales State belt in only his fourth pro fight, and adding the Australian crown one fighter later in a 10-round bout. On his way from Australia to relocate in Boston, Dean stopped in Los Angeles and trained at Wild Card, where Roach took an instant shine to his now protégé.

BigTime Timmy Tells It Like It Is…Inaugural Edition

Monday May 4th, 2009
by BigTime Tim Kudgis

Everyone who knows me knows I am a lazy bastard, so it takes a lot for me to sit down and write something. I feel like putting Suge to work though [Editors Note: at least you know how to use spell check...Jesse take note], and this will give me some more time to bash OnThEGRiND BoXiNG features writer Jesse Rican. Let me introduce you to… “BigTime Timmy Tells It Like It Is.”

Let’s get it crackin’!

First on my plate is the news breaking that the Bobfather, aka Great Uncle Bobby himself, mentioned the possibility of Miguel Angel Cotto vs Manny Pacqiuao in December. My first reaction was… Wow!! Really?? I thought Pacman’s next fight had “Money” written all over it. My second reaction was what the f*ck?!? Read more »

Chris “Kid Kayo” Fernandez Almost Lived Up To His Name

Monday May 4th, 2009
by Jesse Rican

Firstly, I would like to congratulate Paulie Malignaggi on a great victory, and Chris Fernandez as well for fighting his heart out. Their 8 round contest took place just over a week ago on the undercard of the untelevised portion of the Carl Froch vs. Jermain Taylor Super Middleweight Championship fight. Paulie proved himself once again to be the “Magic Man” in winning 7 out of 8 rounds, outboxing his opponent, and beating him to the punch. It was also apparent that Paulie was flat out too fast for Chris.

With all that being said, I would like to focus on the action that took place in the 6th round. As I sat next to Peter Manfredo Sr. surrounded by what was a predominantly east coast crowd who looked at this match as an easy win for Paulie, we all rose to our feet in amazement as Chris nearly KOd Paulie.
