BIGTIME Timmy’s Tip of the Day….Look out for Kyle White

Kyle White was raised in northern New Jersey. He started boxing after he finished his football career at the division IAA powerhouse University of Delaware. There the 5′9″ 175lbs undersized linebacker played with and against some of the best players in the country. Many that are still playing in the NFL today. He was introduced to boxing by undefeated kick boxer, Matt Olszewski and top ranked Jill Emery. Jill then introduced Kyle to her trainer Michael Kozlowski. A few years later Kyle was asked to spar with someone in a gym in New Jersey. Not realizing it was former IBA cruiserweight champion of the world, Bobby Gunn. From that day Bobby Gunn has trained Kyle.

Danny O’Connor wins on Friday Night Fights

Danny O’Connor impressed the Friday night crowd at the Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida, winning a 4 rounder televised live on ESPN2. O’Connor defeated the 2-1-1 Jamar Saunders by way of Majority Decision, in what turned out to be more of a light welterweight slug fest than a boxing match. The 24 year old Saunders didn’t have the pedigree that the decorated former amateur O’Connor comes equipped with, however Jamar showed a lot of heart and fighting spirit in remaining vertical for the entire 4, and in landing more power shots than Danny in at least one round. Don’t be surprised if the young O’Connor goes on to fight in some of boxing’s future wars. Danny improves to 4(1)-0 with 1 KO.

The Judges Scorecards Read…
38-38 Bill Ray
40-36 Rocky Young
40-36 Mike Ross

Danny O’Connor was featured on OnTheGrind Boxing Radio earlier this month.

Suge Green’s Boxing Notebook…Oscar DLH: “Luckily He (Pac) Doesn’t Hit Hard” also Chambers, Arum, Gamboa, and Judah

February 22nd 2009
by Suge Green

As we continue inching ever closer to the May showdown between Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton and pound for pound superstar Manny Pacquiao, let’s consider recent comments made by Oscar De La Hoya about his ill fated effort against the Filipino (as reported in the L.A. Times)…”I felt as if he could just land anything and I couldn’t do anything about it. I just didn’t care. I didn’t care if he was hitting me because I couldn’t do anything about it. Luckily he doesn’t hit hard. Obviously, if he would’ve hit hard, he would have knocked me out with no problem.” I guess Oscar doesn’t count TKOs as KO defeats. He’s going to have to be specific in the future then about his victories over Mayorga, Campas, Vargas, and even Gatti. The last time he scored a knockout without a “T” in front of it was against a guy named Derrell Coley 9 years ago this month. Doh.

Maureen Shea On Her Way part II

February 21st 2009 By Irish Paddy Cronan

“The first time I met Bob Arum three years ago, I went up to him and I said that I would really like the opportunity to fight on one of his under cards. He told me that he was not into female boxing.”
After hearing that Maureen could have given up and resigned herself to the fact that she would never appear on a Top Rank undercard. Instead, she decided she was going to change his mind.

Last month Maureen had another meeting with Bob, and again he told her he was not interested in female boxing. She decided to chance her luck, “They may not be into women’s boxing, but they will be into Maureen Shea. Just give me the opportunity, watch my DVD put me on your show and people will enjoy my performance.”
Here she is now, fighting for a WBA title on Top Rank three years after being told she would never fight on a Top Rank show.
When asked about how her team have played a part in her continued success she responds, “Its about loyalty. Seven years I’ve been with Hector Roca (trainer). Lugi Olcese (manager) was my amateur coach, he brought me to Hector. I’d been with Vinny Sullivan (conditioning), and then Robert Ferguson came in. I never said ‘okay Vinny you got to go, Roberts here now.’ Everybody unites together, and everyone works well together because everyone contributes something different thank makes me a better fighter.”

Maureen Shea On Her Way part I

February 20th 2009
by Irish Paddy Cronan

When one thinks of Irish-American boxers the names Dempsey, Ward and Sullivan immediately spring to mind.
Maureen Shea is the latest in a long line of Irish-American title challengers. She was first thrust into the spotlight while acting as a sparring partner for Hillary Swank in the movie Million Dollar Baby. When Hillary would attend her amateur fights, the media followed.

I was curious to find out how this early publicity shaped her career.
“I feel I rise to the occasion. If it was about her, it was about her. I was there to do one thing and that was to work with her. Then the media was coming down to see me and to talk to me. I went with it and I did interviews when ever it was ok and we always got my training in. To me it didn’t make a big deal. I felt it was good for the sport for men and women’s boxing,” recalled Maureen.

“People have been calling me out my whole career, I will fight who ever gets put in front of me. I feel that if I wasn’t able to box a lick the media wouldn’t have cared about me. The media came because of Hillary but they saw that I was a good fighter and the story became me.”

Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham Supports Old Foe Adamek

Philadelphia, PA. USA - 17th February 2009

When Jersey City’s Polish ex-pat Tomasz ‘Goral’ Adamek defends his IBF
Cruiserweight title, on the 27th February 2009, against Detroit’s
Johnathon Banks at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey; he will
have an unexpected supporter cheering him on ringside, former
Cruiserweight King Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham. On the 11th December ‘08 former Light Heavyweight champion Tomasz Adamek
secured the IBF and Ring Magazine Cruiserweight World titles in a close
split-decision win over the then champion, Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham. In the
end it was so close no matter which way the decision went there couldn’t
and wouldn’t be any complaint. The fight had it all, nonstop action, drama
and three knockdowns, and as such was hailed by many in the media as
“Fight of the Year” candidate and the greatest Cruiserweight fight of all
time, no mean feat when the previous holder of this accolade was the
awesome 1986 war between the legendary Evander ‘The Real Deal’ Holyfield
and Dwight Muhammad ‘Camden Buzzsaw’ Qawi
.

Suge Green’s Boxing Notebook…Campbell, Cotto-Jennings, Gamboa, Dirrell, Brinkley, Klitschko-Haye

Sunday February 15th
by Suge Green/ www.OnThEGRIndBoXiNG.com

Nate Campbell had a tough bout but came out on top Saturday night, in his native Florida in the main event of Don King’s HBO card. Nate admitted post bout that he was physically effected by his failed attempt to make weight, and psychologically so by losing his titles at the scale. Campbell fought through the physical and emotional adversity however, along with the adversity that turned out to be the very game Ali Funeka. The African employed a solid strategy for defeating Nate and probably would have got the nod from many observers had he not suffered two knockdowns, one in the 2nd round and the other in the 11th. Funeka displayed the heart of a champion in climbing up off of the canvas not once but twice, and in making it to the final bell against an experienced warrior and a champion. Any who would say that the Galaxy Warrior is no longer a champion need only consider that People’s Championships are not made of Gold with the purpose of adorning an athlete’s waist, they are made of the hearts and minds of the boxing public…it will take more than a failed trip to the scales on a Friday the 13th in February to strip Campbell of that title. The boxing world now awaits his campaign at 140lbs.

Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham to face Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braith waite

Philadelphia, PA - 10th February 2009

Clash Of the Titans - Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham vs. Wayne ‘Big Truck’
Braithwaite

Former cruiserweight king, Steve ‘USS’ Cunningham, is close to securing
his first opponent, Guyana’s Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite, in his quest
to regain the IBF cruiserweight crown he lost, by a close split decision,
to Tomasz ‘Goral’ Adamek last December.

‘USS’ Cunningham, who beat Krzysztof ‘Diablo’ Wlodarczyk to become the IBF
cruiserweight champion in Katowice, Poland in May ‘07 and successfully
defended it seven months later against Marco ‘Kapt’n’ Huck in Bielefeld,
Germany, had been hoping to secure a quick rematch with Adamek of their
December 11th “Fight of the Year” nominated classic, but after the
announcement that Adamek was to face Johnathon Banks on the 27th February,
at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, started to look elsewhere.

Bobby Gunn to Fight for Vacant NABA Cruiserweight Championship against Brad Gregory!

Hackensack, NJ – On February 25, Bobby “The Celtic Warrior” Gunn will attempt to win his 7th title belt as well as advance himself in the world Cruiserweight rankings. Gunn, the current WBC USNBC champion, will now be fighting for the vacant WBA NABA Cruiserweight crown. A victory could help him surpass other credible contenders while moving him one step closer to another fight with an elite 200 lb fighter.

In Gunn’s way is Brad Gregory 11-2 (9 KO’s), a Kansas native whose two losses were against much bigger and stronger opponents. Gunn is excited about the prospectus of winning another title but knows he must be at his best in order to do so.

“I know Gregory has been fighting as a heavyweight, so I have been sparring with 6’7 260 lb (38-0 contender) Faruq Saleem, who is pushing me to the max” said Gunn, who resides in Northern New Jersey. “I feel great and have the energy of a 15 year old kid who just guzzled a Red Bull. My trainers Aroz “Terrific” Gist and Tommy Brooks are two of the best in boxing, so I am not only feeling like a champion but am training like one too”, said the former WBO title challenger.

Tickets can be ordered by calling 201-741-4994, 610-291-0806 or going to www.dignityboxing.com.

Godfrey injured – Final Eliminator postponed! Herbie Hide still fighting on March 6th in Cuxhaven Aydin, Kretschmann and Airich on the card as well

Bad news for Herbie Hide: The WBC Final Eliminator in the cruiserweight division between the “Dancing Destroyer” and Matt Godfrey that was originally scheduled to take place on March 6th in Cuxhaven, Germany, has to be postponed for at least eight weeks because Godfrey suffered a hand injury while preparing for the fight. Nonetheless Hide (46-4, 42 kos) will make his next appearance on March 6th in an eight-rounder against an opponent to be announced.

“I am fired up to get back to Cuxhaven”, says Hide. “I wasn’t happy with my last performance here and I am glad about the chance to show my fans the real ‘Dancing Destroyer’. I am not coming here for playing. I will use this fight to prepare for Godfrey. My goal is to become the first former heavyweight champion to win the cruiserweight title and nobody will stop me on my way.”

The co-main event features WBC international welterweight champion Selcuk Aydin (16-0, 13 kos) who will make his return to the ring after a three months break due to a rib injury. “Mini-Tyson” is set to defend his title against ring veteran Luis “Morochito” Hernandez (22-3, 15 kos) from Ecuador (fighting out of New York).

Besides Hide and Aydin two of the most promising German heavyweight prospects, Steffen Kretschmann and Konstantin Airich, will be back in action in Cuxhaven. Kretschmann (13-0, 12 kos) who is already ranked on #39 by the WBC will face Russian contender Denis Bakthov (28-5, 18 kos, WBA #14, WBC #23) in a PABA championship bout. Bakhtov has won his last four fights in row; his last loss was against Vitali Klitschko’s next challenger Juan Carlos Gomez in June 2007 in Ankara, Turkey.

Konstantin Airich (11-1-1, 9 kos) will step into the ring against Czech prospect Ondrej Pala (22-2, 18 kos) who has a win over former world champion Henry Akinwande in his resume.

There will be nine fights in total. Eurosport will broadcast the show from the Kugelbake-Halle in Cuxhaven live from 9.00pm.
