There’s Only Ooooooooooone David Haye – The Hayemaker Takes Valuev’s Title In Nuremberg…!!!

Saturday was a great night for British boxing, maybe even for boxing in general. London’s own David Haye captured the WBA title from the Russian giant Nikolai Valuev in a strategically well fought fight.

Despite promising a knockout prior to the fight, Haye followed a game plan of moving and counter punching the slow and immobile Valuev. The result wasn’t always pretty: Haye was on his back foot the whole time, and for the most part only threw 20-30 punches per round. Still, he managed to get one or two cracking shots in every round, while not getting hit at all himself by the slow forward plotting Valuev. Valuev acknowledged Hayes connects by shaking his head after every solid hit, and showed signs of frustration for not being able to catch the elusive Haye. Read more »

At this hour, headlines world wide declare David Haye the new WBA Heavyweight Champion of The World. For some this is an impossibility, illustrated by the fact that over the past several months I have been told by several different people, that David Haye would not make an impact at Heavyweight.

The main reason people gave was his lack of a chin, due to a knock out suffered early in his career at the hands of Carl Thompson. As one who actually watched the fight, I would argue that it was his conditioning that cost him that bout. I was reminded how vital conditioning can be to recovery in a recent interview with Limerick’s Jamie Power, he related that his newly implemented conditioning regime had helped aid his recovery after being on the canvas in his last fight.
